Hello! Welcome to my blog, it’s your girl KanyinWrites again here
on rejuvenation. How has it been with you? Mehn, I feel like opening a Vlog but
I don’t know if I have the swag, face or energy for that. That’s by the way,
let’s get down to business. Before then, I have a confession to make. That’s
how yesterday, my data subscription expired and I found it difficult renewing
it cos of Nigeria’s network wahala. At first, I had started working on what to
post yesterday and all but one nonsense spirit just kept telling me ‘since you
don’t have internet access, there is no way you can upload what you are
writing, leave it jere and do something else’. That’s how I just closed my
laptop and started wandering up and down in the house, looking for what did not
lost. Fast forward to evening, I had to wake myself up from my fantasy like ‘girl
what do you think you are doing? C’mon get working.’ Finally, I finished
writing and it was time to upload and that’s how what I wrote disappeared
because I’m actually managing this laptop (thank God for auto save, I was able
to recover the document). To cut the long story short, the desire to keep
posting drove me and I was able to overcome procrastination.
Today, I would
like to share tips on how we can say goodbye to procrastination. Trust me; it
is a conscious effort to overcome this spirit because it is one inevitable
spirit, I must say. Even if you feel you are the strongest person in the world,
careful and easy still does it. I will share a few today and continue tomorrow.
Let’s go.
- DO NOT blow tasks out of proportion: Stop telling yourself that your career, the future of your business, and even your success in life is dependent on the outcome of that one action that you have to take. If you do this, you’re just going to put so much pressure on yourself that you’ll be looking for any excuse you can find to avoid taking the necessary action.
- ·STOP all-or-nothing thinking: Don’t tell yourself that if you can’t do something perfectly, you might as well not do it at all. Imperfect action is better than perfect inaction. Just start the task not minding if it would bring money or not.
- ·Get clear about what you want in life: Take 20-30 minutes to do this quick goal planning exercise. Write down all your goals in some or all of these categories: career, education, relationships, financial, physical, mindset, creative, spiritual, public service, travel, leisure, and other. Once you have your list, cut them down into your top 10, then down to your top 5, and then your top 3. Do this by asking yourself, “Can I live without this?” Let your less important goals lie dormant on a “maybe” list that you can check on again in a few months. (I copied this one and trust me; I’m trying it as well).
- Link tasks you don’t like to your goals: This helps to mentally (and in writing) tie these tasks to one of your main goals or values. So for example, “writing this post helps me achieve my goal of reaching out to somebody somewhere and touching lives.” By having clarity of mind I will be able to work better on my goals and have less anxiety. By linking the tasks to the joy derived from doing them; you then have a reason that will motivate you to take action.
- Break tasks down into smaller pieces: One of the main reasons why people procrastinate is because the project that they need to tackle is so big, that they don’t know where to start. This makes them feel overwhelmed. Studies show that when children are watching television and they don’t understand what they’re watching, they look away. Adults do the same thing when they feel confused: if you don’t know how to start a project, you’ll “look away” and start searching for a distraction or something else to do. What you need to do is break the project down into small pieces, so that they feel manageable.
- STOP telling yourself that you have to wait until you are ‘in the mood’ before you take action: People say that you can easily get to do what you love to do anytime, any day. For me, I don’t think that is true. I would use myself as an example. Apart from singing which I love doing so much, writing is another thing I love doing. As much as I love doing these things, there are times I’m actually not in the mood. Now that writing is becoming more like a profession for me, I can’t say because I’m not in the mood to write, I would not. Therefore, if you find yourself in a situation where you feel you are not in the mood, please and please, just start and you will gradually find yourself in the mood.
Wow, writing this post today is very interesting ooo. I was hungry before I started but now, I have even forgotten
that I was hungry. Yeah, procrastination has nothing on us. I will continue
tomorrow on more tips to get over procrastination and make each day count and
each action worth the time spent. Stay blessed, stay focused and keep fighting
because the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong…; but time
and chance happeneth to them all. Eccl 9:11 (decided to share my word for
today).
Much Love,
KanyinWrites.
